Farndon is a quite Cheshire village 7 miles to the south of Chester near the A534 and 4 miles off the A41. The village has an interesting history. During the English civil war both sides fought for control of the bridge crossing the Dee in Wales and the village of Holt just across the river. Close to the bridge there is a picnic area and a sandstone cliff.
The parish church of St Chad's contains a rare 17th Century Civil war memorial window. Made in 1662 after the restoration of Charles II measuring 30 by 20 inches, it depicts gentlemen like Sir Francis Gamul and soldiers and equipment from the period. Also depicted in the window is William Lawes playing a flute. He was personal musician to King Charles the First and was killed in Chester during the battle of Rowton Moor by musket shot.

William Lawes
Charles I commented when hearing of his death : "I much mourn in death him whom in life I loved".
He died at the Battle of Rowton Moor 1645. This is an account of his death :
"In these distracted times William Lawes' Loyalty ingaged him in the War for his Lord and Master and though he was by General Gerrard made a Commissary on designe to secure him (such officers being commonly shot-free by their place, as not Exposed to danger,) yet such the activity of his Spirit, he disclaimed the Covert of his Office, and betrayed thereunto by his own adventurousness was casually shot at the Siege of Chester, the same time when the Lord Bernard Stuart lost his life.Nor was the King's soul so ingrossed with grief for the death of so near a Kinsman, and Noble a Lord, but that hearing of the death of his deare servant William Lawes, he had a particular Mourning for him when dead, whom he loved when living, and commonly called the Father of Musick."
William Lawes, personal musician to Charles I.

The window is free to see and the church door was open last time I checked. The other sight in the village is the medieval sandstone bridge that marks the old route into Wales.
