St Mary's Nantwich

Nantwich >Nantwich >Nantwich

Nantwich lies in south Cheshire near Crewe is the second town in Cheshire to Chester. Nantwich still retains a number of half-timbered building despite the great fire of 1583, which destroyed a large part of the town. During the English Civil War Nantwich was the only town in Cheshire to declare on the side of parliament. The town was besieged by royalists and on the 25th January 1644 a great battle followed and the siege was lifted. This day is commemorated every year as Holly Holy Day. Today Nantwich is a pleasant market town which is well worth a visit.

Dominating the centre of Nantwich is the superb 14th century town parish church of St. Mary's. Built of soft Cheshire stand stone with a unique octagonal tower. It is a jewel in the crown of Cheshire.
