Hiroshima and Nagasaki Flower Memorial in Chester
Wednesday August 6th 2009
Meet by the bandstand at The Groves at 8.00 pm
There will be a short memorial for all those who suffered or died as a result of the dropping of the atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, and in the belief that this must never happen again.
The event, which has been held now for 28 years, involves readings and the dropping of white flowers from the suspension bridge onto the river. The final reading will take place on the south bank of the river at the Hiroshima memorial tree.
All are welcome – please bring flowers if you wish.

New Book by Local Author

Eric the Eel - and other strange acquaintances from my murky past.
By Jeff Baker
ISBN 978-09548073-1-3
Fiction
Paperback £6.99

Jeff is an anti-hero who tries but invariably fails. His hopes and dreams are now only fading memories, and none of them fulfilled. When faced with a decision he dithers and then inevitably makes the wrong choice. “I used to be indecisive but now I’m not so sure.” If there is water in the vicinity he will find it and fall in. Seagulls empty their bellies on his head as a matter of course, apparently thinking it to be the thing to do. “Those same gulls have circled over my head through all these years to give me new droppings just to remind me of what my station in life was to be – as though I needed reminding.” He was the only rock musician in the heady 60’s who lived through them in a state of frustrated celibacy, much to his own disappointment and his fellow musicians’ hysterical delight. With a wily Welsh witch as grandmother, a father and uncle with a penchant for entertaining their fellow man in high heels and tights and a mother with a fondness for wandering off to look for the crock of gold at the end of the rainbow, the odds were definitely stacked against our hero from day one. “Is it any wonder I turned to drink?” Certainly a frustrating existence, but just as surely a fun account of a life that could have been worse - although admittedly, not much.
