La Taverna
La taverna is an independent restaurant and bar bringing the fresh flavours and culinary traditions of Tuscany to Chester.
Set in the Jacobean home of the powerful 17th century Gamull family, the restaurant boasts one of the most stunning dining halls in Cheshire.
The restaurant is located on the west side of Lower Bridge Street near the Bridgegate a few minutes walk from the cross.
Dining in La Taverna feels like travelling back in to the 17th century. A truly memorable and unique experience.

Outside on Lower Bridge Street
The front of the building was refaced in brick in the late seventeenth or early eighteenth century.
Downstairs Lounge
Upstairs in the Dining Hall
The upper floor contains a large medieval stone built open hall with a barrel vaulted ceiling.
The hall has several curious features like medieval stone exterior windows facing into the hall,
leading to the suggestion that it was once an open courtyard. Curious pendants in the centre of the barrel vaulting. A medieval three plank door.
The hall was restored in the 1970's. Part of the original wattle and dorb has been made visible.
Fireplace Detail
The fireplace is original 17th century and is made of local red sandstone, lavishly carved with primitive
caryatids and stylised vegetation.
