The Watergate
The Watergate is located on the City Walls at the end of Watergate Street. In Roman times the river Dee would have flown close to here. But it has since changed course.
In 1989 an area at the junction of Stanley Place and City Walls Road near the Watergate was excavated. This excavation confirmed a long held belief that there was a Roman bath building 100m outside of the Fortress gate. As long ago as 1778 parts of a substantial Roman building were uncovered. Items recovered from the Sedan House area include Flue or Box tiles from a Roman central heating system, pottery, an ivory clasp knife, a drinking beaker and a Roman ceramic oil lamp.
