www.blackhousegrills.com In essence, this restaurant is for those who take their food seriously. Observe the slick motions of the open kitchen and engage in the spectacle that is the feature lobster tank with a market-style fresh fish display set out below. Prime beef holds centre stage at ‘the BLACKHOUSE grill’. Meat is sourced from local farmers who rear home-grown, grass fed, hormone free British herds.
A menu boasting Kobebeef, Lobster, Chateaubriand and fresh ocean seafood platters are sure to impress, yet the exuberance of these dishes lays not their name or reputation, but in the taste, flavour and eating experience; all of which attest to the quality.

The most exciting thing to happen in Chester since the Romans arrived Opera Grill, the long awaited brand new 400 seater, £3m restaurant, opened the first week in August 2016.
Individual Restaurants, the company behind some of Cheshire’s most popular restaurants, promises to bring theatre on a grand scale to the restaurant scene in Chester, with the opening of Opera Grill this week.
Described as ‘An Internationally inspired grill using outstanding ingredients’ Opera Grill is a 400 seater restaurant. Boasting a ground floor restaurant & bar, a first floor restaurant & bar with a music lounge complete with bar and stage, along with a south facing all year round roof terrace which is sure to be a hit with Chester sun seekers.
The restaurant will open for lunch until late, 7 days a week and is situated on Pepper Street opposite its sister restaurant, Piccolino.
Following a painstaking restoration of this listed building to expose it's former glory, a further £3m has been invested to create Opera Grill.
The building dates back to 1836 when it first opened as a Methodist Chapel. It then closed shortly after World War One when the building itself was then hidden behind a brand new building, a car garage called “Anchor motor co”. This garage went on to manufacture fuselage and spitfire wings in World War Two.
The building has clearly played an important role over the course of its lifetime with more being discovered about its history all the time. It was only right we made the building something special again for Chester.
The Grade II listed façade is one of grandeur, with distinct neo classical Greek architecture including pillars, pediment and a portico, which makes it stand out from the crowd. By using pictures from the buildings archive, the team at Opera Grill have managed to recreate its original look right down to its steel railings.
Subtle antique brass signage and 3 giant hanging lanterns between the portico’s columns, brings the building to life in the evening.
Designed by Bernard Carroll the interior of the restaurant mixes an industrial look with a touch of opulence.
Full respect has been taken into account internally with its industrial feel of exposed brick and plaster, polished concrete floors, Crittal Windows and original features. All of this is complimented by the use of timeless classic materials including hot rolled steel, Cerused Oak, Antique brass and Arabestato marble. The striking burnt orange leather furniture was inspired by French design house, Hermes.
As you enter the restaurant a full height wine boutique greets you, showcasing bottles from the restaurants extensive list of wines and Champagne created by in house sommelier, Dario Barbato and his team.
The ground floor which has been named the ‘Grill Floor’ features a central island cocktail bar accompanied by dining for guests on both sides.
The open kitchen boasts a 3 meter handmade charcoal & wood burning grill, which sits between two feature wood burning ovens. Either side of this are two, floor to ceiling fridges, lined with pink Himalayan salt bricks where cuts of meat are dry aged, in house.
Just about everything on the menu is made in front of guests. With 25 metres of display fridges highlighting the vast range of fresh produce on offer, including raw bar, cold counter and in house butchers, all adding to the theatre of the restaurant.
Two separate staircases, one at the front of the building and one at the rear, lead you to the first floor ‘Gallery Restaurant’ which looks down onto the ‘Grill Floor.’
The first floor features another cocktail bar which has been given the name ‘The Music Lounge’ and features a stage set for live acts including; International DJ’s, a house band on Wednesday evenings and Gospel choir every Sunday, kick starting the ‘What’s on’ at Opera Grill live entertainment programme.
As you walk out from the first floor to the rear of the building, you step out on to a south facing roof terrace complete with cocktail bar and retractable roof, for all year round dining.
The menu has been inspired by revered chefs and restaurants from around the world, creating a truly international grill. Raw bar, cold counters and salad bars compliment the extensive selection of charcoal grill & wood oven dishes.
The drinks selection is again Internationally inspired by famous bar tenders and bars from around the world, setting a new standard for cocktail drinkers in Chester. All cocktails are made using cold pressed fruits, vegetables & herb juices from the bars, in house juicery. Steven Walker, founder of Individual Restaurants says; “Its exciting to open restaurants in our heart land and our loyal guests are in for a treat. Opera Grill promises to deliver amazing food and drink mixed with great live entertainment.”

The strength of Peter’s vision attracted a loyal following from the outset. Though it began life in the mould of an informal Pizza Rustica, the Soho Pizza Express soon traded in plastic forks for metal cutlery, aware that customers wanted creature comforts as well as the best food in town. With a growing band of devotees providing a solid foundation for the business, Peter soon decided it was time to take the next step and opened a second restaurant in London’s Coptic Street. To help him in the task, Peter employed one of his more flamboyant Italian friends, the master designer Enzo Apicella. It was Enzo’s artistic flair and passion that lent the old Express Dairy building an air of solid sophistication. Its cool, tiled walls added to the unique atmosphere, emphasising the clink of cutlery, the ‘glug’ of wine bottles and the tinkle of good music – all sure sounds of a satisfying and sociable evening. These striking acoustics also helped forge Pizza Express’s longstanding relationship with live music, providing the perfect venue for The Original String Quartet. With just two branches open, Peter and Enzo knew that they had hit on something – trademark open kitchens, live jazz and artistic licence – the passion was everywhere to be seen and had become the iconic ingredient in the Pizza Express success story.
Porta is a tapas bar in the grey area between idea and reality. It’s not open yet. We (Ben and Joe, owners of restaurant Joseph Benjamin next door) had an idea, our family (extremely ‘handy’ builder-electrician-plumber-dad and kitchen-designer-mum!) and brilliant staff are helping us make it happen.
Our aim at Porta is to keep things really simple. A relaxed, totally informal environment inspired by the tiniest independent cafés, bars and tapas bars of Barcelona, Paris and London.
Cured meats and cheeses form the backbone of a menu that is a collection of plates to be enjoyed singularly with a glass of wine or combined to create something more substantial. Call it tapas, call it bar snacks, call it dinner – no rules, just tasty food to accompany good beer, wine and conversation.
Seating is informal – lots of bar stools and casual tables. No need to book, just come along and grab a space – we’ll be open seven nights-a-week from 5pm.
Porta is located under Chester’s Northgate Bridge on the city walls – the site of the original Roman fortress and its north gate ‘Porta Decumana’.
This unit is where we originally opened our little restaurant in 2006 before we moved in to larger premises next door and as such is a bit of an emotional return to the beginning. This is true in ethos as much as location.
While Joseph Benjamin restaurant goes from strength to strength and continues to absorb our blood, sweat and tears, Porta is probably where you’ll find us recovering!
Simply put, it’s the kind of place we want to relax in when we’re not working – unpretentious and comfortable with good music, beer, wine and food.
The food itself is broadly European with a lean toward the Iberian – tapas, without being a Spanish theme restaurant. Classics like jamon, croquetas and padron peppers sit alongside dishes sourced or inspired by other European cuisines (including our own!).
The bar offering is simple too. Six wines – 2 white, 2 red, a rosé and a sparkling – will change regularly. We’ve used all of our wine-tasting/buying skills to find great value and interesting wines – these are likely to be less mainstream, made from more unusual and un-heard-of grape varieties, but offer exceptional quality and value if you know where to look. Portugal, Spain and Italy are our starting points…
A cold ‘half’ of quality lager is not to be knocked either (Estrella Damm in this case) and a small selection of bottled beers – local and European, with the odd American craft beer thrown in for good measure gives plenty of options.
Simple as that. All we need to do now is do it!
We’ll be updating this site as we go along through to opening. The date we’re trying not to shout too loudly about is 18th November. We should be open by then… but watch this space!
Please do have a look at the blog-style page under ‘Latest News’.
