Gladfest

Gladfest 2019
www.gladstoneslibrary.org/GladFest

Gladstone’s Library is fast becoming the place to go for anyone who enjoys reading or creative writing so we have decided to bring you GladFest - a literary festival to bring together writers and readers – in fact, anyone who loves books - in the glorious setting of Britain’s only residential library.
We are delighted to bring back to the Library many of our favourite authors, along with a few new faces who we are sure will be returning to us time and time again.
We hope you will join us for this celebration of reading and creative writing, of books and their authors. Help us put Hawarden on the festival map and make GladFest an annual event in the literary calendar.
On Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th September, the Gladstone Room will be open for reading throughout the day: bring your own book – or borrow one of ours – choose a squidgy leather armchair or sofa, then sit back, relax and read. A selection of tea and coffee – not to mention our delicious homemade cakes - will be available from Food for Thought between 10.00am-4.00pm with lunch being served between 12.00pm-3.00pm.
Waterstones will be selling books by the authors taking part in the Festival in the Anwyl Room on Saturday and Sunday.
Check out our GladFest Guide, with helpful information about travelling to Gladstone's Library, parking arrangements and food and drink at the event.
Tickets for most events are £5.00 unless otherwise stated. Concessionary rates are available. Please contact Reception for details.
To book tickets, call 01244 532 350 or email enquiries@gladlib.org or call in at Reception.

Moonlight Paranormal Moonlight Paranormal

Moonlight Paranormal

Stanley Palace, Chester, is known to be the most haunted building in this historic city. Built in the 16th century on the foundations dating back hundreds of years, Stanley Palace generates immense levels of paranormal activity during each and every visit. This Grade II listed half timbered building is most famous for its involvement in the civil war, used to hide King Charles supporters, and later became a prison for those waiting to be executed for treason.

The hauntings of Stanley Palace are as renowned as the history of the structure, with many locals and volunteers witnessing paranormal activity for themselves. Children are frequently heard running from room to room, laughing and singing along the way. The ghost of James Stanley who was executed in the 17th century has been seen wandering the halls, often showing himself as a photographic negative. The figure of a woman has been seen playing to piano to her lover, and a dark and dangerous shadow, known to be one of the “Black Friars” shows himself to those who dare to visit in the dead of the night. With table tipping, equipment evidence, ouiji board activity and spirit sightings, this is one of the most haunted locations that Moonlight Paranormal investigates.

Join us and our team of experienced mediums on the 29th September 2012 for an unforgettable experience at the infamous Stanley Palace. The ghost hunt begins at 9:30pm and ends at 4:00am. Tickets are £49 per person, with discounts available for large group bookings, please enquire for more details.

Steam railway tours in the UK
Steam railway tours in the UK

Steam railway tours in the UK

We deliver unforgettable steam railway day trips, tours and long-haul holidays.
Travelling by private vintage steam hauled trains is hard to beat. Because steam trains often pass through unspoiled and remote landscapes, you travel through unique and seldom-seen scenery.
Our specially chartered trains are beautifully restored and very comfortable. We include excellent foods and fine wines throughout your trip, delivered with impeccable friendly service. Many meals are served on board our own restored restaurant car, others alfresco at quaint old stations in far flung places.
Book a steam railway day trip in the UK and traverse the dramatic and wild Carlisle to Settle line or marvel at the amazing feats of engineering needed to create Wales’ famous Blaenau Ffestiniog Tunnel. Take a tour into Europe for mountainous terrain, ancient history and unexpected exotica. Or head further afield into the wild wastelands of Patagonia, Brazil, Eritrea, Zambesi, Sardinia and more, steam hauled whenever humanly possible.
Most of our charters run during daytime, so we book quality hotels for overnight stays. Some tours - including Southern Africa and Russia - feature vintage hotels for extra charm and authentic atmosphere. When reverting to service trains we arrange special itineraries and steam hauled programmes to make your tour a unique experience as well as an unforgettable one. You’d be surprised how often we manage to negotiate unique runs along exciting railway lines long closed or just re-opened.
The romance of steam train travel is as potent as ever, and we’re expecting a flurry of early bookings this year. We look forward very much to welcoming you aboard your steam railway holiday adventure!!

St. John's Project
SJProject

St. John's Project

www.thesjp.com

The SJP Project is an ambitious Chester based community project to make two of Britain's most important churches sustainable as multifunctional, community focused buildings. Visiting is the only way to truly experience the churches of St John's and St Peter's of Chester. St John's Project is an exciting new project that has an initial aim to restore the churches of St Johns and St Peters collectively. Enthusiastic volunteers are busy every single day to establish both the churches not only as places of worship but as historic marvels that can be enjoyed by everyone. SJP is essentially an organisation that provides a service for the community- we want both St John's and St Peter's to be there for future generations! Both churches get thousands of visitors every year, help us welcome and accommodate them by joining our team- visit our 'Contact Us' page. We would like to welcome everyone from in and around Chester, and would like to stress that the church is for community usage- faith or no faith!

Mapping Medieval Chester

Mapping Medieval Chester: place and identity in an English borderland city c.1200-1500 This AHRC-funded research project brings together a team including literary specialists, historical geographers and historians to explore space, place and identity in medieval Chester. The project asks questions about Chester as a city on the (often troubled) border between England and Wales, and about how different medieval inhabitants imagined and represented the urban space around them.

This July, we will be making our mark on Cheshire with the opening of our newest bar on St. John Street in Chester. Maintaining the original brickwork, the bar and restaurant will be located on the ground floor providing the perfect location to enjoy a carefully crafted cocktail.
A raised lounge area creates an intimate environment to unwind in while enjoying a range of made to order seasonal dishes, prepared with the freshest ingredients.
Pitcher & Piano Chester will also feature a basement lounge, perfect for group bookings and parties, with no hire charge and everything tailored to your exact requirements.
Pitcher & Piano will be open to the public from Friday 1st August…we look forward to seeing you there!
