Shopping on Godstall Lane
Godstall Lane is a small lane connecting St Werburgh Street with Eastgate Street row. It is lined with small shops and a couple of bars. Godstall Lane is one of only four medieval lanes to survive within the City Walls. It was an important route to the Abbey of St Werburgh (Now Chester Cathedral). The name meaning 'God's Place' refers to a tradition that a hermit lived here in the 12th Century. Godstall Lane can be accessed from street level from St Werburgh Street opposite the Cathedral or by stairs to the Rows from Eastgate Street opposite Browns of Chester.
